FIDIC3 based Dispute Adjudication Boards (DABs) and their correlatives under the FIDIC MDB harmonised version, Dispute Boards, have two purposes. They help avoid disputes and they decide on unavoidable disputes. Dispute avoidance is as important as dispute resolution. This dualistic concept has a wide acceptance throughout the world and has to some extent become the international standard in the construction industry.

I recently attended the latest Dispute Resolution Board Foundation ("DRBF") Regional Conference in Doha, Qatar.1 The theme of the conference was "Effective Use of Dispute Boards for Dispute Avoidance and Resolution on Major Projects".
